"the ONLY Hair Salon/Book Store in the WORLD!"
Welcome to the the Wonderful World of Beauty and the Book and Headquarters of The Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Clubs! You are now in the know on all that is happening at Beauty and the Book!
January 18, 2000 marked the occasion of the Grand Opening of Beauty and the Book, the ONLY Hair Salon/Book Store in the World! We have been having a GRAND time every since. Oxford American Magazine, the Magazine of Good Southern Writing, surprised me by coming to my first Grand Opening. They sent Dallas/Plano photographer, Patricia Richards, and Texas author, Carol Dawson to cover the event. They have all have been close friends ever since.
I was so busy giving Carol Dawson an author make-over, I practically missed my own Grand Opening. Patricia captured those historic moments and Carol wrote the story and dubbed me, “Hairdresser to the Authors” for the magazine. I have a shrine to John Grisham, (he was the publisher at the time), and Oxford American Magazine ever since for putting me literally on the literary map. Authors have been coming in droves ever since too and so has the media. I guess opening a hair salon/bookstore is a little out of the ordinary. To me, it’s just combining my two lifelong passions in life that I think just make good sense, Beauty and the Book!
Beauty and the BookWe like to really roll out the red carpet, or should I say leopard print carpet, for all the authors that grace our doors! You see our signature print is Animal Print as we are WILD about beauty in books. I offer all our visiting authors hair care services. We love to treat them royally and bow to the feet of our author Kings and Queens! We have had some amazing book signings all hosted by my Pulpwood Queen Book Club chapters included Kinky Friedman, (who was running for Governor of Texas at the time), Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, and of Golden Girl Fame, Rue McClanahan. Pulitzer Prize winners, Edward Humes and the late great Doug Marlette and soon, Rick Bragg who wrote "It's All Over But the Shouting!" Some other New York Times Bestselling Authors and celebrities that have traversed the country to grace our doors have Elizabeth Berg, Pat Conroy, Ron Hall and International Super Model Paulina Porizkova of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue fame!
Beauty and the Book is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the trip. We are a full service hair salon and specialize in Chi, Sebastian, and Paul Mitchell Products. Nail Technician, Janet Novey completes are full service picture and we aim to please. We tend to agree that offering the best in all your Beauty and the Book needs will make you want to come back again and again. Both of us Virgos, we may look different, are different ages, but we all love each other and are a passionate team when it comes to creating “true” beauty, outside and within. Whether may me be blonde, brunette, or "READ" head, we treat all of our customers as we would like to be treated ourselves, as royalty!
I have been called in the past to Shreveport/Bossier to do celebrities hair for concerts including The Go Go’s, Art Garfunkel, and my favorite party band of all time The B-52’s! My last celebrity to do was Joan Rivers, what a reader and what a wonderful, wonderful woman! If all my clients could be like Joan Rivers, my life’s work would be a dream! And I have just been called back to do her hair and makeup again! What joy!
I carry many unique items that are very queenly, partially because Beauty and the Book is the Headquarters of The Pulpwood Queens Book Clubs and second, because doesn't every woman want to be treated like a QUEEN! Our shelves and displays are covered with our Official Hot Pink Pulpwood Queen t-shirts, Girlfriend Weekend T-shirts, tiaras, rhinestone encrusted jewelry, vintage jewelry, one- of- a- kind jewelry including vintage domino and semi-precious stone jewelry and other items leopardlicious!.. We even have a ostrich plumed, gilded cherubic throne for you to be seated and crowned to receive royal treatments, such as, A Day of Beauty at Beauty and the Book. We also do Gift Certificates and can do special custom gift packages for that special someone who would enjoy a truly special and royal gift. Many a bride, prom Queen, and beauty pageant contestant has had her hair and make-up done at Beauty and the Book.
Stewart Cohen Pictures has even dubbed us “HOME OF THE TEXAS BIG HAIR”, after doing a photo shoot for them for a gallery exhibit in Dallas, Texas. You never know who may walk through our doors, from Don Henley of “The Eagles” fame to America’s favorite cowboy group, “Riders in the Sky”! And Darlings, the photo opportunities here are endless. We have a basket of loaner tiaras, boas, that just scream, Kodak moment! I now have added vintage hats for those souvenir photos at Beauty and the Book! Bring your tiaras, boas, too and girlfriends and I will snap the shot! Some people have declared that my shop looks just like a jewelry box exploded! What a delightful image! You too can discover 'TREASURES", whether books or other beauty finds at Beauty and the Book!
My bookstore features local, southern, regional books and authors, children's books, beauty and girlfriend books, OFFICIAL Pulpwood Queen and Timber Guy Book Club Selections and of course my book, "The Pulpwood Queens' Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life' which is a must read for man, woman or child!
I also pride myself on selecting books that are from first time or yet undiscovered authors. I feel if given the right opportunity and position to be seen, they should be and read, well and often. I have had over 500 authors involved with book events visit us since I opened. Therefore, we do carry many first edition signed copies and some have become highly collectible!
January 2008, my first book debuted “The Pulpwood Queens’ Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life”, published by Grand Central Publishing and I am now working on my next book, “Kat on a Hot Tin Roof, RUSTED! The Pulpwood Queens Guide to Reading and Writing for a Higher Purpose”! The books are my story on how books saved me, my memoir of my reading and writing life, and a resource for anyone who has an interest in authors, books, reading, writing and most important, PROMOTING LITERACY! My hope and dream is these books will be a springboard to get everyone on the same page, reading and writing! for LIFE!
You see everybody has a story and it’s my mission in life that we share each others’ lives by reading, writing, and sharing the stories. I have always said, "A story not told or written down is a library lost to not only family and friends, but to the world!" What if, "To Kill a Mockingbird" had not been written by Harper Lee or the books of Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, for goodness sake. Makes me just shiver!
And please mark your calendars for the second weekend in November, as that is always the weekend of Books Alive, our Christian and Inspirational Book Festival and the third weekend in January, our Girlfriend Weekend 2011 Author Extravaganza that's Grand Finale is our "Great Big Ball of Hair" Ball! My nickname is not KAT for nothing!
I always say if I can get you to come all the way out to my neck of the piney woods in East Texas just once, you’ll be back to grace my doors again and again! We flat make Beauty and the Book, BIG TIME FUN! And besides, as I always say tongue in cheek, “We’ll keep the hairdryer on for Ya!”
Tiara wearing, Beauty and the Book sharing,
